Global Brigades Selects Ghana

Global Brigades Association (GBA) is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. Since 2004, Global Brigades has mobilized thousands of university students and professionals through nine skill-based service programs to improve the quality of life in under-resourced communities. As part of GBA’s growth strategy, it explored the feasibility of extending its development programs to Africa.
In September 2010, GBA issued a final report selecting Ghana as the African country that is most suitable for its African expansion. GBA will be implementing its Business, Medical, Public Health, and Water Brigades programs in Ghana.
Business Brigades will provide business consulting and strategic investment to support under resourced microenterprises in targeted Ghanaian communities.
Medical Brigades will develop sustainable health initiatives and provide relief where there is limited access to healthcare, for example, establishing mobile clinics in different parts of the country.
Public Health Brigades will be focused on the health infrastructure in select Ghanaian communities. This program will empower these under resourced communities by activating initiatives that decrease life threatening diseases and providing public health education.
Water Brigades will design and implement water systems to prevent water-related illnesses in a number of communities with limited access to clean water. GBA notes that with improved access to a sufficient amount of clean water, members of these communities can break the connection between contaminated water and illness and ultimately live healthier lives. GBA volunteers will work with community leaders to design large scale water systems for each community. Once planning and design is complete, volunteers will work side-by-side with community members to construct the water system. For more information, visit Global Brigades Association (GBA).
